The MiniMed 780G from Medtronic represents 2025's proven and highly advanced tubed system for Type 1 diabetes, excelling with its innovative Meal-Detection technology. The system stands out through its high accuracy and prediction capabilities, automatically adjusting insulin every 5 minutes while intelligently detecting meals. This technology enables precise correction of blood sugar levels from a target of 100 mg/dL and provides hours-ahead predictions, leading to significant reduction in hypoglycemia. With a capacity of 300 units and weighing only 85 grams at dimensions of 5.3 x 9.6 x 1.5 cm, the pump offers a compact and robust solution with integrated touchscreen. The SmartGuard technology ensures automatic corrections and makes the system particularly family-friendly. Integration with the Guardian 4 sensor enables 7-day durability, while FreeStyle Libre with 14-day durability will be supported soon. This combination achieves impressive 80–90% Time-in-Range (TIR) and significantly improves both sleep and daily life for users. The waterproof rating up to 2.4 meters and long infusion sets with up to 7-day durability significantly reduce maintenance requirements. However, the pump must be removed for water activities, which can be a limitation for very active users. Additionally, sensor durability is shorter than competitors, and the system requires higher setup effort compared to simpler models. Compared to other systems, the MiniMed 780G shows particular similarity to the iLet, as both work fully automatically and offer constant adjustments with meal correction. While the 780G scores with longer infusion sets of 7 days, the iLet convinces with less setup effort. The t:slim X2 also offers similar HCL capabilities and automation levels, but makes different compromises in size and operation.
